Stress in a Workplace During the Holiday Season

Oftentimes the holiday season can be extremely stressful in a workplace. A lot of people are out of Paid Time Off (PTO), hard deadlines and end of the year sales goals, etc. It can be said that stress isn’t always a bad thing. It can help you stay focused to meet those challenging deadlines. However, if it is affecting your work performance and overall well-being, that is when you need to take action.

Below are 5 ways to relieve stress in a workplace:

Prioritize:Get ahead of the game. Make a list of the deadlines/projects you are aware of this upcoming holiday season. Create a game plan of doing a little each week so you don’t wait until the last minute and feel overwhelmed. Rank each of your tasks in order of what needs to be completed first. This will help you prioritize your time efficiently.

Exercise: You hear this over and over again…. Exercise! Well, it does help! I promise. According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise is a national stress reliever because it pumps endorphins which help produce your brain’s feel good neurotransmitters. Even if you get up and walk for 10 minutes. A great way to incorporate exercise in your daily routine at work is on a fifteen-minute break, go for a walk.

Eat Healthy: Having a balanced meal can really help your stress levels. Superfoods can help stabilize blood sugar. Leafy greens such as spinach contain folate, which produces dopamine, a brain chemical that helps you keep calm.

Positive Attitude: If you believe it, you will start doing it. Having a positive attitude can help motivate you to get things done and have it done well. When you are stressed you can become negative and get frustrated with your tasks which can lead to costly mistakes. Having a positive attitude will give you a better outlook on the tasks in front of you and overall success.

Get some Rest: Giving yourself time to rest and get a clear mind on things can create a positive environment. Relaxation increases blood flow to your muscles giving you more energy and can improve memory.
